Context
This coffee has been produced by Lot 20's Kolik Coffee Co-operative Society in Nandi County.
Lot 20 founder Sidney Kibet registered his Nandi hills site as a co-operative in response to new legislation in Kenya that prevents the sale of coffee cherry by individuals. The move enabled Lot 20 to continue working with local farmers in the area.
Following the legal changes, smallholders register with a pulping station, enabling them to move their own coffee cherry from their farms to their registered pulping station without a movement permit. All other movement of coffee requires permits.
Kolik Coffee Co-operative Society focuses on processing Lot 20's washed coffees.
Where a co-operative holds the pulping licence, the society acts as agent for its grower members, weighing and recording each grower's cherry and reporting back to them on quantity and quality. This provides the traceability Lot 20 relies on.
The varietals grown in the Nandi highlands give cups a distinct regional character.
